Resilient Piha

Who we are

Originally a sub-group of the Residents and Ratepayers committee, we have now grown to include members of the wider community.

What we do

We coordinate and share information with the local community on Disaster Readiness and Preparedness, and support Emergency Services with communication and coordination during Disaster Response.

We support our Emergency Hubs, and train and resource a group of Cluster Communication Leaders so that analogue radios are distributed across the area, in case they are needed to communicate with emergency services and Auckland Emergency Management during a disaster (these are used if internet and phones are down, or areas are geographically cut off from others).

We apply for and manage grants for resources for the local community to ensure we have what we need in an emergency.

Our Resilience Plan

You can find the latest draft of the Resilient Piha plan here.

We are inviting feedback from the community, and you can provide feedback by filling in this form

FAQs

How to find information prior to an event:

Keep an eye on Metservice for weather watches or warnings.

For updates and information about what to do to prepare for an event, and updates about any disasters affecting the Auckland Region, check the Auckland Emergency Management Facebook page.

These updates will also be shared to our Resilient Piha Facebook page, where we also share local information.

How to find local information during/after an event:

Check the Auckland Emergency Management Facebook page for updates about emergencies affecting the Auckland region.

Another good way to find out local information during/after an event is to be connected in with your Cluster Communication Lead via your local block WhatsApp or Facebook group.

Cluster Communication Leads are trained individuals spread throughout the neighbourhood who hold analogue radios for communicating with emergency services should phone and internet service not be available.

How to find your Cluster Communication Lead:

We have coordinators in the following areas:

  • From Marawhara Stream to the end North Piha

  • Marine Parade North, Garden Road (including Seaview Road from Lion Rock to the Store)

  • Glen Esk Road

  • South Piha

  • Lower Seaview to Rayner Road

  • Rayner Road

  • Upper Seaview Road and Pendrell

  • Piha Road to Te Ahuahu

  • Te Ahuahu Road

  • Piha Road to Karekare turnoff

To be connected with your Cluster Lead please, fill in this form

Please note as we are a volunteer group, these forms are only checked monthly. If you would like a faster response it’s best to e-mail resilientpiha@gmail.com

How to find an Emergency Hub during a Disaster:

The Piha Surf Life Saving Club is our designated Emergency Hub, and may be stood up following a disaster if needed and it is safe to do so. If North Piha is geographically cut off from the rest of Piha, the United North Piha Surf Club is the designated North Piha Emergency Hub.

Prior to and following a disaster we will post updates on our social media page www.facebook.com/resilientpiha

Following a disaster there will also be signage outside the buildings indicating that these hubs are active.
