Piha R&R News Update - 12th October

Well we finally got a glimpse of summer weather and then a full day of fog. For me this meant a day without Lion Rock, as it was not visible from Rayner Rd all day. So let us look forward to the predicted hot dry summer with fingers crossed and an one eye on the water tanks.

Meanwhile your Piha R&R committee continues to work on issues that affect our precious and much loced community:

  • Piha Campground: Support the continued operation of Piha Campground by attending the Local Board meeting. Oct 15th, 4:00pm at Henderson. Your Piha R&R committee, as well as many others, have been advocating strongly in support of Fiona and the Canpground.

  • Piha Domain Upgrade: We are working with the Waitakere Ranges Local Board to ensure that the Piha Domain upgrade works are completed to a satisfactory standard that will inclide visitor amenities, adequate parkingm but, hopefully, deiscourage “hoons making donuts” in ther vehicles.

  • Skateoark Facility: We are continuing to pursue this with the assistance of Council and the Local Board and will be presenting to the Local Board workshop in early November.

  • Piha Road Stormwater: The stormwater drains down the Piha Road hill, from the lookout to Pendrell Rd, that have remain blocked with debris year on year, have been scheduled for clearing during October.

  • South and Mid-Beach Carparking: The mid-beach “lakes” remain and we keep pushing for appropriate maintenance. South carpark tyre stops were renoved last year and we are pushing for their return before the summer visitor rush.

  • Speed Control and Pedestrian Safety: We are working with Auckland Transport, with assistance from the Waitalere Ranges Local Board, to reduce speed limits and/or intoduce traffic calming or shared road protocals to Piha. It is a long tedious battle made more difficult by Auckland Transport administratibe changes, but we keep pushing.

Piha Community Post Office: For those who may be unaware, this facility is owned and operated by Piha R&R for the community and relies on your support for it’s ongoing viability. Postnistress duteies are now shared by Chris and Lisa. Pop in, say hello ans support the Piha Post Office.
