Piha Stream and Lagoon - Staying healthy

Yesterday’s weather, 29th July, saw the Piha Stream rise significantly with the volume of water created by the overnight rain that continued through the day. With a midday full tide, there was the potential for flooding, however the Piha Stream has been flowing well since the “intervention” for the ANZAC ceremony. History has shown that when the stream is flowing well and the tides are favourable, the risk of flooding is minimised.

Also, while the stream is flowing well, the high tides wash into the lagoon and assist in prevention of E.coli pollution. Auckland Council testing for E.coli has confirmed that tidal flow is essential and effective in fighting pollution in the Piha Stream Lagoon. Testing has also confirmd that the primary source of pollution is now resulting from storm water originating in the Piha, Pendrell, Seaview and Rayner Roads area. An investigation Group is being initiated to identify and address the source(s).
