Piha R&R is trying to have the Piha Stream mouth opened to the sea.
This will allow the present build-up of water to be released and hopefully allow the sea to flush out the algae that is starting to flourish. The high spring tides are now diminishing so flushing might be minimal.
From Graeme Carrie- Water Quality Committee: There has been several people voicing concern about the orange brown colours in the Piha Stream. This looks to me like Iron Oxidising Bacteria and has gathered where ever the stream is stagnant with little or no flow. If this is the case it won’t be toxic and we just need to get the stream flowing again to fix it.
