As we look forward to moving into COVID-19 Level 3, how are you and your “bubble buddies?”
My wife and I have been enjoying our walks in the community and along the beach, catching up with friends and with people we see too rarely and enjoying the friendly greetings and conversation with those we do not recognise. One often discussed topic is the lack of noise pollution and the resulting cheerful sound of birdsong that is probably always there, but sadly drowned out by the ambient noise of vehicles and commercial activities. We even remark at the sound of the very occasional commercial aircraft flying overhead, a normally constant intrusion that is now a rarity. While there are still a few people on the beach that one might guess are from outside of our community, we are pleased that common sense and kindness has prevailed, signage had reduced to one acceptable plea at the beginning of Piha road and everyone we meet is making a good faith effort to maintain social distancing, keep to their Bubble and retain a positive attitude. It is gratifying to see that even the surfers are respecting the rules. We are all making sacrifices for reasons that at times seem to have little relevance, but we are making those sacrifices for the greater good of New Zealand. Let’s all make those sacrifices together.
