Auckland Council recently held an open day at which the Proposed Piha Beach Dune Management Plan(Draft) was presented to all interested parties by its Author Mr. Jim Dahm. SEE HERE for Plan
At the November meeting of the Piha R&R it was agreed that we should adopt the private submission of Mr. Graham Cleghorn, (committee member,) and we have advised Auckland Council of that position.
SEE HERE for the Cleghorn Submission.
The Cleghorn submission is very balanced and points out that the Piha R&R believe that the three main areas that should be addressed by Council are:
1) That the draft Dune Management Plan as presented is not acceptable to the community.
2) That to be successful community consensus is essential.
3) That further and continued research is required to confirm the validity of some of the disputed theories embodied in the plan.
To achieve a successful plan, we have proposed that the Council form a working committee that includes representative from all interested parties in the community. This would create a forum whereby a consensus could be reached that enables Council to manage the dunes responsibly with local community support, for the benefit of all Piha residents and visitors.
